What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a therapy that encourages the body to repair its own healthy balance. It is based on the theory that our bodies are constantly flowing with an energetic field, which reflects our vitality and determines our wellbeing. Dealing with the stresses of everyday life often throws our body’s energy out of balance. Reflexology works by releasing blocked energy to restore those imbalances and strengthen the energy flow thus aiding the restoration of the body’s natural equilibrium.

It is a non-invasive therapy that requires no pills, apparatus or lotions to be effective. Reflexologists use a gentle massage and pressure technique that is applied to a client’s feet

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that is individually tailored to specifically aid the body, and its organs, to create homeostasis – meaning that the structures of the body are all working together at their best. It supports the whole person and promotes wellbeing. A Reflexologist would never diagnose nor provide client advice on any medication. Clients are advised to seek medical advice if they are concerned about any conditions presented and require diagnosis.

The roots of Reflexology and its relationship with healthcare are believed to date back to ancient Egypt, with the oldest documentation depicting the practice being discovered in the tomb of an Egyptian physician, dated around 2500 BC.

Reflexology forms part of many historic healing practices that have been documented medically and philosophically across regions including Native America, China, India, Japan and Europe - many of which are still practiced today.

What are the benefits?

People use Reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress. It also:

  • reduces tension and encourages relaxation and a sense of wellbeing
  • promotes self-healing
  • encourages harmony and balance to all systems of the body
  • encourages elimination of toxins from the body
  • improves circulation (both cardiovascular and lymphatic)
  • encourages efficient energy flow throughout the body

Research has shown that it can be a curative treatment for back pain, migraines, fertility issues, sleep disorders and hormonal imbalances. Reflexology will strengthen the immune system, prevent further illness and breathe life back into your body, making you feel balanced, positive and full of energy. It is safe and suitable for all ages.

All you need to know about your first appointment.

A full case history will take place before treatment begins – questions will be asked regarding your medical history, lifestyle and overall health. Once the forms and paperwork have been completed, a Reflexologist should explain the practice, including details of the history and what the treatment will entail to ensure a client is comfortable and aware of the principles and benefits of Reflexology.

You will be asked to lie on a bed or sit on a reclining chair for the duration of your treatment. Prior to commencing a treatment, a Reflexologist will cleanse the feet using a gentle antiseptic wipe. A treatment will then begin with a relaxing foot massage, followed by applied pressure to specific reflex points, concluding again, with a relaxing foot massage. All you have to do is relax.

Please note, at present, I am not offering Maternity Reflexology. I do however have a fellow local Reflexologist who specialises within this area of holistic therapy that I can recommend.
